Best Performance Cars of 2015

Here are a few of our favorite cars of the year. Make sure to try them out soon, before our attention turns to the 2016 models.

Audi R8

Balanced all-wheel drive handling and an intuitive dual-clutch transmission, the Audi R8 combines the best in German and Italian automaking. The V10 Plus model carries a 5.2-liter V10 engine producing 550-hp, which powers the R8 from 0 to 60 in 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 197 mph.

Tesla Model S

An electric car has to top the list because what Tesla is doing is downright amazing. This is a 5-passenger sedan with the capacity to go from 0 to 60 in 3 seconds. It has a rear-mounted 362-hp engine ;that sends its torque directly into a reduction gear that powers the differential. That's right. This car has no transmission. How cool is that?! And it has the highest Consumer Reports rating of any vehicle ever. The car it beat? The 2014 Tesla model.

BMW M3

The new M3 ditches the 4-liter V8 for a 3.0-liter, twin-turbocharged in-line six-cylinder, getting 425-hp and 406 lb-ft. With its dual-clutch transmission, the M3 hits 60 mph in 3.9 seconds, but its top speed is electronically capped at 155 mph.

Scion FR-S

The Scion has a 200-hp 2.0-liter 4-cylinder Boxer engine and comes attached to ;manual or paddle-shifted automatic 6-speed transmissions. Its maximum torque is 151 lb-ft and goes from 0 to 60 in 6.8 seconds. While these numbers are not impressive, what is impressive about the FR-S is how it handles a turn at 60 mph.

Porsche Cayman GTS

The Cayman GTS gets 340-hp from its 3.4-liter flat 6-cylinder engine. It comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission, though you can opt for the seven-speed paddle-shift dual clutch gearbox. The GTS' top speed is 177 mph and goes 0 to 60 in 4.6 seconds. The Cayman is the sports car driver's sports car.

Chevy Corvette

The Corvette may be the best bang for your buck on the list at just $55,000 delivered. Its LT1 6.2-liter V8 can provide 460-hp with the performance exhaust option, and carries the new 'Vette to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds.

Nissan GT-R

This car is fast and powerful, bringing top-flight performance at a price of just over $100K. It goes from 0 to 60 in 2.7 seconds, launched by 545-hp and 463 lb-ft torque from a 3.8 liter V6. All wheel drive with ;a six-speed dual clutch automatic gearbox is the only way to harness so much energy in a usable manner.

Ferrari 458 Italia

Many tout the new Ferrari 458 Italia as the best performing vehicle ever made. Those not willing to go so far will admit that it is the best Ferrari. It has a 4.5-liter V8 rated at 562-hp and 400 lb-ft torque. The Spider Speciale version hits 60 from full stop in just 3.0 seconds, and has a top speed of 202 mph.

If you have a need for speed, here are a few cars that you can afford, and ;one ;that you cannot afford so you can see what you are missing.

Hennessey Venom GT (270 mph)

There is some debate about whether this is the fastest car ever, because it registered 270 mph in only one direction. Legitimate records are averages of the speed registered in two runs. The Venom GT did hit the mark, though, with a 1,244-hp 7-liter twin-turbocharged V8. Now that you have the benchmark, let's see what you can do on a budget.

Dodge Challenger With Scat Pack Shaker

"Stronger, faster, and more imposing" is Dodge's approach to muscle cars this year, and they succeeded with the new Challenger. Its 6.4-liter V8 with 392 Hemi Scat Pack Shaker option puts out 485-hp and 475 lb-ft of torque. Dodge claims ;it will go 0-60 in 4.5 seconds, which would outperform the Mustang and Camaro. With the Scat Pack, the Challenger just ;comes into our ;budget at $39,940.

2015 Ford Mustang GT

The new Mustang has been completely redesigned, but kept its attractive price tag. It brings its famous 5-liter V8 engine with 435-hp in 6-speed and automatic transmission options. The new Mustang gets to 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds and clears a quarter mile in 12.8 seconds. At $32,300, it holds its reputation as the affordable muscle car.

Chevy Camaro SS

Next year we await the newly ;redesigned Camaro, but its outgoing model meets up to its reputation among the ;top ;explosive muscle cars on the market. Its 6.2-liter V8 is capable of 426-hp and 420 lb-ft of torque tested 0 to 60 in 4.8 seconds, just a hair out of second place. Drive one today for $33,355.
