Most vehicles on the roads today have automatic transmissions. Replacing a transmission is a big, pricey job. Sometimes it costs more to replace the transmission than the price of the car even. If you are driving a car with an automatic transmission, we have a few tips for you on how to extend your transmission’s life. ;

Change the Transmission Fluid

Change the transmission fluid every at least every 15,000 miles or once a year. This is an easy thing you can do to make your automatic transmission working properly. Check your car manual to see if they recommend a more frequent fluid drain schedule for your transmission. ;

Let Your Car Warm Up ;

Allow your vehicle to warm up if it is cold outside. Often times automatic transmission fluid changes viscosity and becomes more viscous in cold weather. This prevents the fluid from flowing normally and can hurt your transmission because your transmission will not be properly lubricated when you sift it into gear. Luckily, high quality synthetic transmission fluid, like AMSOIL, offers a more constant viscosity over a wide range of temperatures and will flow correctly even at cold temperatures. ;

Stop Before Reversing ;

Always, always come to a total, complete stop before going into reverse. Whether you are going from reverse to drive or drive to reverse this is very important. The gears inside of your transmission can grind if you do not come to a complete stop which will put excess wear and stress on your transmission. ;
